Uniting on Hawker
Uniting on Hawker is a new social and affordable housing development in Bowden, replacing 10 outdated properties with 30 contemporary apartments across two levels. The development will provide 24 social housing and six affordable housing apartments, with a focus on supporting women aged 55 and over who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.
Working with UnitingSA, City Collective and the broader project team, CLOVER developed the landscape approach to connect the new homes with green, accessible and comfortable outdoor spaces.
The landscape design focuses on creating a strong connection between inside and out, with planting positioned to provide attractive outlooks from apartments while shaping welcoming entrances, courtyards, communal areas and quieter places to sit, relax and connect with others. Accessibility, privacy and passive surveillance are carefully balanced to create spaces where residents can feel comfortable and secure.
A diverse, low-maintenance planting palette brings seasonal colour, texture, shade and habitat into the development, with species selected to respond to different microclimates across the site. Trees and planting also play an important role in cooling the development and creating a greener, more comfortable environment throughout the year.
More than simply providing housing, Uniting on Hawker is about creating a place that feels like home, with landscape contributing to dignity, independence, wellbeing and a stronger sense of community.
