Waikerie Entrances
CLOVER developed a coordinated landscape and arrival strategy for Waikerie, creating a stronger sense of identity at key entrances into the Riverland town and encouraging travellers along the Sturt Highway to stop, explore and spend time in the local community.
Â
Concept designs were prepared for three major town entrances, together with the prominent roundabout connecting Strangman Road, Lawrie Terrace, Campbell Terrace and McCoy Street. Rather than treating these locations as isolated interventions, the design established a consistent landscape and material language that could be recognised across Waikerie.
Â
The concept draws strongly from the surrounding landscape and local cultural context. Connection to the Murray River and the significance of the rain moth to the Ngawait people informed the design response, with sinuous walls, surface treatments and landscape forms referencing the movement of the river and its network of tributaries.
Planting, integrated landscape treatments and carefully considered built elements provide opportunities for beautification while responding to DIT requirements, sightlines, safety and ongoing maintenance. Materials developed for the town entrances were carried through to the roundabout, strengthening visual continuity and creating a recognisable arrival experience.
Â
Designed with staged implementation in mind, the strategy provides Council with a practical framework that can be progressively delivered as funding becomes available, building a distinctive and welcoming identity for Waikerie over time.
