Unley Road Public Realm

Unley Road is one of Adelaide’s important urban corridors, connecting a series of distinct neighbourhoods, businesses and destinations. CLOVER led a multidisciplinary team with Infraplan and Arketype to develop an urban design framework that strengthens the identity, function and experience of the corridor’s public realm.

The project was developed across three key phases — Precinct Analysis and Structure Planning, Street Typologies and a Public Realm Palette. Together, these established a coordinated approach to streetscape design while responding to the different character, opportunities and constraints of individual precincts along Unley Road.

A collaborative co-design process was central to the project, with a series of roundtable workshops bringing the project team and stakeholders together to test ideas, share thinking and develop practical design responses.

The resulting framework provides a suite of precinct-specific materials and spatial planning principles alongside paving design, bespoke street furniture, planting palettes, public art and lighting strategies. Rather than applying a single treatment across the corridor, the approach creates consistency where it matters while allowing individual precincts to retain and strengthen their own identity.

The study provides a practical framework to guide future investment and progressively create a greener, more cohesive and people-focused Unley Road.
