Summit Aquatic & Leisure Centre
The Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre is a new regional destination in Mount Barker, located on a greenfield site adjoining the existing Summit Sports Hub. The centre includes a new 25m pool, hydrotherapy and water play facilities, gym, administration areas and café, with provision for future expansion.
Â
CLOVER was the Landscape Architect, collaborating with DesignInc, Mount Barker District Council and the broader consultant team from masterplanning through to detailed design. Early involvement helped inform the siting of the building, access and car parking, while establishing a landscape framework that connects with the existing Sports Hub and allows for the future growth of the precinct.
Â
From the outset, the landscape response sought to respect and enhance the character of the site by safeguarding existing River Red Gums, integrating natural stormwater treatment systems and carefully framing views toward Mount Barker Summit. Sustainability and water management were key drivers, with integrated WSUD initiatives designed to capture, treat and slow stormwater runoff across the site.
Â
Landscaped rain gardens planted with native species filter and infiltrate stormwater naturally, improving water quality while contributing to biodiversity, urban cooling and the overall character of the precinct. These systems also create opportunities for passive irrigation and reduce reliance on conventional stormwater infrastructure, resulting in a more resilient and environmentally responsive landscape.
Â
The broader landscape design encompasses all hard and soft landscape works, tree protection and retention, stormwater treatment and infiltration, and a network of pedestrian connections and linkages. Together, these elements establish a cohesive landscape setting for the Aquatic and Leisure Centre while supporting future stages and the continued development of the Summit precinct.
