Beach Road, Christies Beach

Celebrating the coastal character, colour and quirky local culture of Christies Beach was central to the activation of Beach Road.

CLOVER was lead consultant, working with the City of Onkaparinga and public artists Wills Projects to translate Council’s urban design activation strategy into a series of detailed streetscape nodes and gathering spaces. Rather than changing the character of the street, the project builds on what makes Christies Beach distinctive, creating memorable places that reflect its relaxed coastal lifestyle and emerging tourism identity.

Four activation nodes introduce new street trees and planting, lighting, colourful furniture, outdoor dining and public art. A mix of seating, tables and informal gathering spaces provides different ways to stop and spend time along the street, including South Australia’s first ChillOUT Tree with integrated shade and charging facilities.

The improvements encourage people to linger between the beach and local businesses, meet friends, dine outdoors and experience more of Beach Road, supporting local traders while strengthening the identity of the main street.
