Mount Barker Hospital Emergency Department
The new Emergency Department at Mount Barker Hospital is complemented by a therapeutic landscape that supports the wellbeing of patients, visitors and staff while strengthening connections to the surrounding Adelaide Hills environment.
A key part of the design process involved engagement with the Aboriginal Health Group through a series of yarning circle workshops, providing valuable insight into the significance of the site for the Peramangk people. These conversations informed the landscape response, drawing inspiration from local seasons, natural systems, vegetation communities and the movement of water through the landscape.
The design transforms the hospital surrounds into a restorative setting centred on an existing natural swale, which was rehabilitated as a biodiverse landscape feature. Rationalised pedestrian connections, native planting and carefully considered outdoor spaces create opportunities for respite, reflection and connection with natur,
offering moments of calm within a busy healthcare environment.
Locally indigenous Adelaide Hills plant species were selected to strengthen ecological value, provide habitat for birds, insects and reptiles, and reinforce the character of the surrounding landscape. The result is a resilient and therapeutic landscape that supports healing, celebrates Country and enhances the experience of one of South Australia's fastest-growing regional hospitals.
