CLOVER worked closely with Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), Aspect Treetop School and DesignInc Adelaide to develop a landscape that seamlessly connects internal learning environments with the outdoors, creating a responsive, flexible and engaging setting for students and staff.

The design process was founded on listening. Working alongside teachers and school staff, we invested significant time in understanding students' needs, routines and daily experiences. These insights were explored through a series of spatial diagrams, mood boards and concept testing to ensure the landscape was both practical and responsive to the unique learning environment.

The resulting design is a diverse collection of outdoor spaces that support a range of learning styles and sensory needs. Welcoming arrival and transition zones, connections to the COLAs, active and nature play spaces, quiet retreat areas, a kitchen garden and a yarning circle all work together to encourage exploration, learning and wellbeing.

Spaces for regulation and quiet reflection are integrated throughout the landscape, using feature screening with portal windows to maintain visual connection while creating a sense of comfort and security. Terraced seating beneath the existing fig tree reduces climbing risks while providing opportunities for gathering, outdoor learning and peaceful retreat. A calming palette of natural materials, carefully considered planting and generous open space allows students to comfortably move between activity zones without becoming overwhelmed.

Seeing students enjoying the completed playspaces has been a rewarding milestone for the team and reinforces the importance of collaborative, user-centred design. CLOVER is proud to have contributed to such a meaningful project alongside Aspect Treetop School, Autism Spectrum Australia, DesignInc Adelaide and LCS, creating an environment that supports the incredible work of the school and the families they serve.
